Each spring local artists in the city of Yachats volunteer to design and paint banners to be hung on the city street lamp poles during the summer months along HWY 101 in Yachats, OR.
This year’s 35 canvas banners are approximately 23″ x 42” with a rounded end. The artist’s designs are applied using acrylic paints. The 2021 theme is “What’s inside gets out in Yachats.” A theme is given to inspire but is not required. Banners are hung on the lamposts viewable on Hwy 101 in downtown Yachats between July and October. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the banner auction will take place ONLINE again this year (not at the Commons building) ending on October 2nd.

"Inspired by my photos from Newport's Oregon Coast Aquarium, I chose a jellyfish for the topic of my banner. The beautiful free form moving through the water creates a lovely design in the space of the banner. In my research, I discovered jellyfish in various colors, many in oranges and pinks; so I chose oranges and yellow-oranges for my jellyfish, arranged on a blue/green background to catch the attention of the viewer. I also learned that jellyfish and sea jellies are the informal common names given to the medusa-phase of certain gelatinous members of the subphylum Medusozoa; therefore I am titling my banner Medusa."

"Throughout the past year or so it was very quiet, life was reserved...and dark - we spent a great deal of time alone and at home. On our outings we did only what we needed to do. Meeting friends and family up close and in person wasn’t much of a possibility - although some did create "friend pods”. This little pod of musicians met deep in the sea, maskless and distanced by the water, they joyfully created music for all that could hear. I wanted my banner to bring a smile to faces by creating musical characters connecting deep under the sea making merry music that bubbles to the top of the water."

“We all carry the memories of our ancestors, whether we are land, water, plant or creature. Atticus and I often sit outdoors, thinking of those whose bones we walk on, those who’ve disappeared from the sea and hillsides, those whose genes are present in our eyes and fur and fingers, and we are silenced by the magnitude of it all.”

"What's inside gets out in Yachats. To me, I immediately thought of what goes in, goes out, such as the Moon and the Sun. The Yin and Yang symbolizes the concept of dualism, describing how opposite forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in nature, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. This is the balance and beauty of life. This balance of our natural world enhances the vibrancy of our quaint little town of Yachats, and with it, Yachats captivates those who are drawn to her splendor."

"I thought the Irish tale below brought out the best of Yachats. Not only has salmon played an important role in the history of the region, but Yachats has embraced the Celtic culture with its Celtic Festival, which has been celebrated for years. According to Irish legend, when Fionn mac Cumhall was a boy, he was sent to live with the poet Finnegas, who had wisdom in the ways of the world. In exchange for studying with Finnegas, Fionn cooked and cleaned for him. Finnegas lived by the river Boyne because he knew there lived in its waters the Salmon of Knowledge. If he could catch and eat the salmon, all the knowledge of the world would be his. One day, he caught the magical salmon and had Fionn cook it up for him right away. In his haste, Fionn flipped the cooked salmon onto a plate too quickly, and the oily fish began to slip from the plate. Fionn grabbed it with his thumb and was scalded with the oil from the fish. He stuck his thumb in his mouth to soothe it, and all of the knowledge of the world was transferred to him. From that day on, he would suck on his thumb to know the answer to any question he had. Fionn grew up to become the wise leader of the Fianna, the greatest band of warriors Ireland had ever seen."

“I’ve always been passionate about the sea, and since I moved to the coast I’ve been inspired by the whale sightings to draw my own interpretation of their beauty.”

“I am a mixed media artist living and creating joyfully on the coast; I love working with color/texture/symbolism and found objects/treasures. Seahorse WELCOME BANNER: The seahorse is a magical and peaceful creature; known for its uniqueness and for bringing good luck and spiritual transformation. Also known for creativity and playfulness; All of these qualities are a perfect alchemy for beautiful YACHATS. May this banner welcome visitors and locals both in a wonderful and inspiring way!”

“Yachats, and the rest of the Central Oregon Coast loves to welcome many visitors to our beautiful and friendly area. I was inspired by the many young couples who come to share their vacation time with us. This banner displays a couple of those folks enjoying each other at the coast in Yachats. We look forward to seeing many more this summer. Enjoy”

"The theme: 'Whats inside gets out in Yachats'. My interpretation is my imagination and creativity gets out! Once summoned watch out!"

"Like last years banner, I just was craving bright and vivid color once again, so I decided to really lean into playing with gradients. Giant Pacific Octopus are my favorite animal, and once I started painting the tentacle, I reflected on the theme this year and decided it had to be holding the gem toned heart of Yachats. Yachats to me has always been the place where I can let my heart just be, where it always feels at home and accepted."

"When the fish are jumping,
They feel like whales,
And then quickly go down deep,
In schools or one by one,
Up the river you may see them,
Perhaps at the crashing waves near the point,
But they are never far and always near,
Neath the wild rhododendrons,
The ferns,
the changing skies,
What's inside,
Gets out in Yachats."

"An abstract interpretation of the full moon over Cape Perpetua and Yachats Bay. This is a very special view from my front deck when the full moon lights up the area at night."

"This is my third year to participate in the banner project. It is especially meaningful after all the happenings in our world this last year. My banner was to show all things outdoors. The background of the couple walking into nature was to emphasize that it is time to get fresh air, take meditative walks, and simply let the healing and recovery begin. Hopefully, we have all had time to “re” evaluate our lives, how and with whom we spend it. One of my favorite lines has always been “not another minute will your money buy”.

"This project coincided with my best friend's surgery and recovery. The community here, along with other friends and family, made Loki's operation possible. As he healed, I was able to paint nearby and offer comfort; therapy for both of us. The community here, namely the persistent Saturday demonstrators, have also helped greatly in my return home. I grew up here and treasure memories of living above the laundromat and working at the Green Salmon, among others. May this banner serve as a symbol of gratitude and a prayer for peace, love, and harmony."

"The theme of "What’s Inside Gets Out at Yachats” reminds me of the Hermetic axiom “As above, so below.” What we look for outside is invariably found within – as the cliché says – the last place we look! I immediately thought of the classic spiral form of the Chambered Nautilus shell which uses the self-similar pattern of replicating the same form over and over again. In our world, represented by the vivid ever-changing colors, world events seem to isolate and make “big deals” out of differences and contrasts, yet the underlying pattern remains the same, ever building by repetition. Ever-expanding externals can be traced back to a single consistent internal theme. A Sitka Spruce, a sand dollar and a sea star are symbolic emissaries of our local culture going back many millennia, observing change with placid constancy. The golden ratio, implicit or explicit in so much geometry of the natural world, reminds us that we’re all interconnected, inseparable and interwoven with the fabric of life that is reflected here. I have collected many examples of what has become known as “sacred geometry” at GeometryCode.com."

"In Pacific Northwest Coast Culture, Raven is a powerful and mysterious trickster, symbolizing creation and knowledge. Some believe that messages from the creator are buried in his wings, knowledge that is only revealed to those most deserving of it. For the wise who acknowledge that what the eye sees is not always the truth, Raven is implemental in recognizing what is true and just. He is feared and never mistreated."

"Each year as people drive by on 101 they see my big planter full of glorious yellow daffodils, welcoming spring with its promise of new beginnings, new growth, and new experiences or renewal of friendships and family connections. My banner gives an opportunity for year around cheer with the color of the sky and the green of the forest surrounding the sunny yellow flowers."

"This year’s theme ‘What's Inside, gets out at Yachats’...could be interpreted as ‘getting out’ along this amazing coast in general. I guess that could be many different things, visitors getting out of their cars to enjoy the coastline and cool weather or the local residents getting out of their homes when the rain stops. For me, what's inside gets out means the opportunity to express love and wonder of the natural world in painting my banner and participate in a project which will help to promote youth art education. I think ‘Common Loon’ is a misnomer, there's nothing common about the beautiful patterning on the plumage of this bird, sometimes referred to as the Northern Diver. Loons inhabit coastal waters and lakes in coniferous forests. For many people these birds represent the wilderness, and their yodelling calls have echoed for millenia across the lakes where they raise their young. I chose the Loon as a subject for my banner this year for their exquisite and distinctive patterning and as a year-round resident who walks the coast daily, I sometimes see them migrating along the shore to their breeding grounds. Sadly, Loons have disappeared from some former nesting areas due to human activity on lakes during the summer and climate change is projected to reduce those areas even further. I would like to acknowledge and thank Cindy Fullwiler (cindyfullwilernaturephotography.com) for her kindness in allowing me to use her wonderful photos for visual inspiration for my banner."

"Hermit crabs are anomuran decapod crustaceans of the superfamily Paguroidea that have adapted to occupy empty scavenged mollusc shells to protect their fragile exoskeletons. There are over 800 species of hermit crab, most of which possess an asymmetric abdomen concealed by a snug-fitting shell. In plain English that means they like to get inside empty seashells to protect their bodies and are adorable when they stick their heads and claws out. After several ideas I settled on the hermit crab to represent the 2021 banner theme 'What’s Inside Gets Out In Yachats'."

"Inspired by a retro print on a pillow, this design took me back to the 70's when I first fell in love with the Oregon Coast. To me Yachats still embodies all that was magical, mystical, and groovy about the 70's!"
