Artist Statement: “The theme of “What’s Inside Gets Out at Yachats” reminds me of the Hermetic axiom “As above, so below.” What we look for outside is invariably found within – as the cliché says – the last place we look! I immediately thought of the classic spiral form of the Chambered Nautilus shell which uses the self-similar pattern of replicating the same form over and over again. In our world, represented by the vivid ever-changing colors, world events seem to isolate and make “big deals” out of differences and contrasts, yet the underlying pattern remains the same, ever building by repetition. Ever-expanding externals can be traced back to a single consistent internal theme. A Sitka Spruce, a sand dollar, and a sea star are symbolic emissaries of our local culture going back many millennia, observing change with placid constancy. The golden ratio, implicit or explicit in so much geometry of the natural world, reminds us that we’re all interconnected, inseparable, and interwoven with the fabric of life that is reflected here. I have collected many examples of what has become known as “sacred geometry” at GeometryCode.com.”
