Artist Statement: “Hermit crabs are anomuran decapod crustaceans of the superfamily Paguroidea that have adapted to occupy empty scavenged mollusk shells to protect their fragile exoskeletons. There are over 800 species of hermit crab, most of which possess an asymmetric abdomen concealed by a snug-fitting shell. In plain English, that means they like to get inside empty seashells to protect their bodies and are adorable when they stick their heads and claws out. After several ideas I settled on the hermit crab to represent the 2021 banner theme ‘What’s Inside Gets Out In Yachats’.”
